3 Winners of the 2023 ENSM Young Scientist Award Announced

 

The Energy Storage Materials Young Scientist Award recognizes promising young scientists within the first 10 years of completing their doctoral degree whose work in energy storage materials and devices has demonstrated significant innovation and great potential for the field. We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2023 Energy Storage Materials Young Scientist Award:

Maher El-Kady, UCLA, United States of America

Maher El-Kady

Maher El-Kady is a distinguished researcher and innovator currently serving as a professional researcher in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UCLA. He is also the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Nanotech Energy Inc., where he translates scientific breakthroughs into commercial applications. With a remarkable career spanning various disciplines, El-Kady has made significant contributions to the fields of energy, electronics, and sustainability through his expertise in materials design and implementation. His prolific research output includes 70 papers and over 200 patents, which speak to his groundbreaking advancements in the field. Throughout his career, El-Kady's work has been celebrated with numerous prestigious awards, including recognition in Iconic Express Magazine's list of the top 10 Influential Leaders of 2023, C-Level Focus's ranking of the 10 Best CTOs of 2022, and the C&EN Talented 12 award from the American Chemical Society. As the Co-founder and CTO of Nanotech Energy Inc., he has successfully bridged the gap between academia and industry, leading the development and mass production of graphene and safer lithium-ion batteries.

Federico Bella, Politecnico di Torino, Italy

Federico Bella

Federico Bella is a Full Professor of Chemistry at Politecnico di Torino (Italy). His main scientific activity covers post-lithium batteries and electrochemical ammonia production through sustainable chemistry-oriented and multivariate approaches. He has published more than 120 papers and has an h-index of 72. He has received awards from the most important worldwide scientific associations, such as the International Society of Electrochemistry (2023 Tajima Prize), the Royal Society of Chemistry (2021 Horizon Prize), and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (2019 Piontelli International Award). He is coordinating an ERC Starting Grant project (SuN2rise), with an overall fund of €1.5M, and has recently launched the first Italian research laboratory on potassium-based batteries.

Yaxiang Lu, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China

Dr. Yaxiang Lu

Dr. Yaxiang Lu is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOP-CAS). She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham (UK) and later worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey (UK). She has been a faculty member at IOP-CAS since April 2018. Her research focuses on advanced electrode and electrolyte materials for energy storage batteries, particularly Na-ion batteries. She has a significant track record of peer-reviewed publications in the fields of Materials, Energy, and Chemistry, including in journals such as ScienceNature EnergyEnergy Storage Materials, and JACS, with over 7,000 citations and an h-index of 41. The recent academic honors and awards she received include the First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award, membership in the CAS Youth Innovation Promotion Association, the Capital Frontier Academic Achievement Award, and “IJMS” Young Scientist Award.

Winner of the 2023 ENSM Award Announced

 

The Energy Storage Materials Award recognizes an outstanding scientist whose work shows impressive innovation and who has made significant contributions to the field of energy storage materials and devices.  

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2023 Energy Storage Materials Award: Dr. Y. Shirley Meng, Ph.D, University of Chicago, United States of America.

Shirley Meng

Dr. Y. Shirley Meng is a Professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. She serves as the Chief Scientist of the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science (ACCESS) Argonne National Laboratory. Dr. Meng is the principal investigator of the research group - Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion (LESC), that was established at University of California San Diego since 2009. She held the Zable Chair Professor in Energy Technologies at University of California San Diego (UCSD) from 2017-2022. Dr. Meng received several prestigious awards, including ECS Battery Division Research Award (2023), the C3E technology and innovation award (2022), the Faraday Medal of Royal Chemistry Society (2020), International Battery Association IBA Research Award (2019), Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists Finalist (2018), C.W. Tobias Young Investigator Award of the Electrochemical Society (2016) and NSF CAREER Award (2011). Dr. Meng is an elected Fellow of Electrochemical Society (FECS), Fellow of Materials Research Society (FMRS) and Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She is the author and co-author of more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, two book chapters and eight issued patents. She is the Editor-in-Chief for Materials Research Society MRS Energy & Sustainability. Dr. Meng received her Ph.D. in Advance Materials for Micro & Nano Systems from the Singapore-MIT Alliance in 2005. She received her bachelor’s degree in Materials Science with first class honor from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore in 2000.

Winner of the ENSM Award 2022 Announced

 

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2022 Energy Storage Materials award.

The purpose of the ENSM Award is to recognize an outstanding scientist in the field of energy storage materials and devices who has made a significant contribution and whose work shows significant innovation in the field.

The 2022 winner is Dr. Yang-Kook Sun at Hanyang University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Yang-Kook Sun is currently a distinguished professor at Hanyang University in Seoul. He is a leading scientist in the battery research field with outstanding records and achievements. After receiving his Ph.D. degree at Seoul National University in 1992, he has pursued his passion for energy storage and conversion materials for innovative and high-level scientific work. One of his representative research achievements is high-energy and long-life cathode materials with a concentration gradient structure for lithium-ion batteries. His inventions have been successfully commercialized and used as cathode materials in the battery pack for various electric vehicles. His achievements are not solely limited to cathode materials though as Prof. Sun has worked on a wide scope of next-generation batteries. As reflected in published papers, patents, and honors, his excellence in scientific and technical achievements put him at the forefront of battery research and development and a world leader in battery technology.

Bios

Dr. Yijin Liu is a Lead Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He leads the Transmission X-ray Microscopy (TXM) program at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), which has been broadly applied to a range of high-profile applications including energy materials, industry catalysis, oil production, and material under extreme conditions. With a scientific focus on energy material science, Liu’s research group develops and utilizes novel X-ray characterization techniques to detect the degradation phenomenon, to reveal the failure mechanisms, and to tackle challenges in synthesis and manufacturing. Notably, his group combines high-throughput experimentation with artificial intelligence to systematically investigate the interplay and evolutions of the hierarchical structure and the chemical heterogeneity, both of which are functionally very important. Liu’s work is of scientific and practical significances.

Prof. Jia-Qi Huang received his bachelor and Ph.D. degree in Department of Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2007 and 2012, respectively. He is now a full professor in Advanced Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science at Beijing Institute of Technology. His research interests focus on the energy chemistry in the energy storage systems, especially the fundamental and application research of high energy density batteries. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed SCI papers in his career with a total citation for over 40,000 times with an H-index of 106. He was awarded the Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analysis in the years of 2018 to 2022, and China Youth Science and Technology Award Special Award in 2022.

Winners of ENSM Achievement and Young Scientist Awards 2021 Announced

 

We are delighted to announce the winners of this year's Energy Storage Materials awards.  There are two separate awards:  

Firstly, the ENSM Achievement Award, which is awarded to one scholar, together with a cash prize of $1000.  This year's winner is Professor Feng Wu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Secondly, the ENSM Young Scientist Awards.  Three are awarded, each with a cash prize of $500.  This year's winners are: 

  • ​Dr Minghao Yu, TU Dresden, Germany
  • Dr Wei Lv, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, China
  • Dr Yuan Yang, Columbia University, USA

Bios

Professor Feng Wu

Prof. Feng Wu, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Academician of Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials Sciences, Distinguished Professor and Vice-Director of Academic Committee of Beijing University of technology, Dean of Qiushi College, Chief Scientist and Director of Clean Energy and Power Field of Beijing Electric Vehicle Collaborative Innovation Center. He also serves as the Director of the National High Tech Green Material Development Center and Vice-Chairman of China Battery Industry Association.

Academician Feng Wu has long been engaged in the research and industrialization of new secondary batteries and related energy materials, and is one of the leaders in the field of green secondary batteries and related energy materials in China. He firstly put forward the academic idea of using light weighted multi-electron and multi-ion reaction system to realize great-leap-forward improvement of battery energy density, constructed new system and key materials of high energy density secondary batteries; he developed a series of key new materials, new battery preparation processes and technology; battery safety technologies for Lithium-Ion batteries; he was the first to propose the concept of safety threshold boundary of battery system, and led the team to develop identification and control technology; He invented Li-containing hydrogen storage alloy and its preparation method, and presided over the establishment of China's first Ni-MH battery pilot base and the first Ni-MH battery automation demonstration production line.

As the chief scientist, he has successfully presided over three National Basic Research Program of China (973) on new secondary batteries and related energy materials (2002-2019) and a number of other National Key Projects; he has also been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of “Energy Material Advances”, a cooperative Journal of “Science”. He has published over 600 SCI research papers and holds over 100 invention patents. As the first prize winner, He was recognized with the most prestigious awards in science and technology in China- State Technological Invention Award (Second Class), State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Second Class), and 16 Provincial/Ministerial Science and Technology Awards; he also won the Research Achievement Award of the International Battery Materials Association (IBA), the Battery Division Technology Achievement Award of the international Electrochemical Society (ECS), and Lifelong Achievement Award of International Automotive Lithium Battery Association (IALB). He has served as co-Chairman of the China-US Electric Vehicles and Battery Technology Workshop for 14 consecutive times and Chairman of Beijing Power Lithium Battery Technology and Industry Development International Forum for 9 times.

Dr Minghao Yu

Dr. Minghao Yu is the independent research group leader at Technische Universität Dresden. He received his doctoral degree in Material Physics and Chemistry from Sun Yat-sen University (China) in June 2017. He joined Technische Universität Dresden under the support of the Humboldt Research Fellowship in November 2017. In March 2019, he was appointed as the independent research group leader. His research interests include (1) Development of novel organic and inorganic 2D materials and novel 2D hybrids; (2) Fundamental electrochemistry study on 2D materials for electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalysis; (3) Assembly of functional energy devices, including supercapacitors, hybrid-ion capacitors, multivalent metal batteries, dual-ion batteries, and fuel cells. He has published more than 100 scientific articles, which have attracted over 15,000 citations with an H-index of 60 (Web of Science). He is also the editorial board member of the journal Molecules and the journal Materials Futures. In 2018-2021, he was recognized as the Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics). In 2021, he was awarded the USERN Prize in the field of physical and chemical sciences.

Dr Wei Lv

Dr. Wei Lv is an associate professor at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Tianjin University in 2012. His research interests focus on electrochemical energy storage devices and related materials, such as the carbon-based hosts and the catalysts in Li-S batteries and the lithium metal anode. He has published more than 190 papers with a citation of over 13000 times and is granted more than 40 patents, including 3 US, 2 Japan, and 2 Korea patents. He is granted by the Excellent Young Scientists Fund of NSFC and the Guangdong Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar, and identified as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate (2020 and 2021)

Dr Yuan Yang

Dr. Yuan Yang is currently an associate professor of materials science in the department of applied physics and applied mathematics at Columbia University. He received his B.S. in physics at Peking University in 2007, followed by the completion of his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Stanford University in 2012. After three years as a postdoc in the department of mechanical engineering at MIT, he joined Columbia University in 2015. Dr. Yang’s research interests include advanced energy storage and thermal energy management. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers with a total citation over 27,000 times and an H-index of 51. He is a Scialog fellow on Advanced Energy Storage, and a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in 2020 and 2021. He has won 3M Non-tenured Faculty Award in 2021, Young Innovator Award by Nano Research, Emerging Investigators Award by Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

Winners announced: 2017 Energy Storage Materials Best Paper Award

 

Energy Storage Materials is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Best Paper Award. Exceptionally, we selected two papers for the award this year.

Marya Baloch, Devaraj Shanmukaraj, Oleksandr Bondarchuk, Emilie Bekaert, and Michel Armand have been awarded for their paper Variations on Li3N protective coating using ex-situ and in-situ techniques for Li° in sulphur batteries (Energy Storage Materials, Volume 9, October 2017, 141-149).

Xin Bing Cheng, Chong Yan, Jia-Qi Huang, Peng Li, Lin Zhu, Lida Zhao, Yingying Zhang, Wancheng Zhu, Shu-Ting Yang, and Qiang Zhang have been awarded for their paper The gap between long lifespan Li-S coin and pouch cells: The importance of lithium metal anode protection (Energy Storage Materials, Volume 6, January 2017, Pages 18-25).

The authors will be invited to attend the 2nd International Conference on Energy Storage Materials (ICEnSM 2018) and the awarding ceremony. Our warm congratulations to the winners!
